If You're Team Feels off, Start Here
If Your Team Feels Off, Start Here
Most leaders don’t lose the day at noon.
We walk into most days reactively.
No clear priorities. No real visibility. No plan. We just “do”. Which isn’t bad, but instead of wondering why our team isn’t where we want it to be, let’s change a few simple things.
Why does the team feel off? Why is performance inconsistent? Why are we always putting out fires?
It’s not a people problem.
It’s a preparation problem.
If we want to run a highly effective team, we don’t need more time. We need control over what actually drives performance. What is the team doing on a daily basis? This isn’t micro-management. This is basic leadership.
The best leaders don’t wing it. Even if we think we have a plan. Do we really?
We need to walk in prepared and with a set plan for each day.
Time to focus on 3 daily tasks to improve your team’s performance:
1. Clarity – Make it simple. Just focus on TODAY.
You don’t need more motivation.
Your team needs direction.
If people are guessing, drifting, or working hard on the wrong tasks, that’s on you. Not them. That’s on the leadership. Hate to break it to you.
Write down and answer these three questions every day:
What are the top 1–3 priorities today?
What does a win look like by the end of today?
Where should the focus be today?
If it’s not clear, it’s not getting done.
Just as in sales – Confused people don’t buy. Neither does your team.
We assume they should know how to do their job. They should get it. They are adults. Ever said that? I bet you have.
They don’t. Nor are they supposed to without direction. We all need Clarity.
Clarity stops aimlessness.
Clarity removes hesitation.
Clarity creates speed.
Clarity drives execution.
Your job: Remove confusion before it starts.
2. Visibility – What is each team member doing?
You cannot lead what you can’t see.
Most leaders feel like something is off, but they can’t point to exactly where, what, or why.
There’s your problem. Feelings.
Feelings don’t fix performance. Visibility does. Don’t be on the outside looking in, be IN it. Be visible. Be present. Know what is going on.
Every day, you should make a list and know:
Who is on-track vs. who is off-track?
What activity is happening and by whom – not just the results of activity?
Where are deals, projects, or people stuck? And why?
If you’re only looking at outcomes, you’re too late. Activity breeds results.
Performance drives that activity, and performance is driven by behavior, habits, and consistency.
Hope is not a strategy.
Data is the reality.
Numbers don’t lie.
People do.
Your job: Make performance visible.
3. Intentional Touchpoints – Who needs you TODAY?
Leadership isn’t about treating everyone the same.
It’s about the right people at the right time. You need to be aware of your team members’ individual daily needs.
Some may need pressure.
Some may need clarity.
Some may need confidence.
Stop spreading yourself thin. Stop leading everyone the same. Know your team by KNOWING the individual needs on your team each day and knowing your limits.
Every day write down:
Who are the 1–3 people I need to coach today?
What does she or he specifically need from me today?
What conversation am I avoiding with them today?
The conversation(s) you’re avoiding?
That’s usually the one that helps them. Ultimately helping you.
Avoiding it doesn’t protect your team. It holds them back.
Your job: Lean into it. Who needs you today?
The Through Line (What makes it all go.)
Most leaders think we need better people.
Most of the time we don’t.
We need a better system.
Clarity → Visibility → Intentional Action
Stack that daily and watch the shift. Watch it get better. Watch them produce results.
Your team stops guessing.
They stop hovering.
They start acting not reacting.
They go get it. They execute because they know WHAT to execute.
When that happens, performance becomes consistent and outcomes become more reliable.
If you’re leading a team and you feel like something is off, it’s not random.
It’s fixable. Start with your day. TODAY.
