The Permission Leaders Need
We are supposed to have it all figured out because we are the leader. We have the title. People depend on us, and we have the need to hold onto that perception, that designation. Be that person.
Crazy part, this perception isn’t coming from our team or from those around us, it’s coming from us and what we think is the right answer. Best part, we can give ourselves permission to change it.
We feel like we must have every answer.
We feel like if something breaks, it’s on us.
We feel like we need to always be the perfect example, no cracks, no off days, no slowing down.
That pressure is self-created.
It’s not leadership. It’s weight. It’s hard. Call it what it is. We struggle with it. Whether we can see it or not. It’s that thing that constantly eats at us.
And eventually, it shows up in how we lead.
We get short with people. Family and team.
We hold onto things too long.
We stop delegating, “it’s just easier if I do it.”
We’re physically here. Mentally? Not 100%.
Our team feels it.
Our family feels it.
Our results feel it.
Time to see it. None of it has to do with not being able to. It’s what we are doing to ourselves. It can change though.
Strong leaders who start to understand it can change. We start to realize something’s got to give. This is NOT what we signed up for.
Give yourself permission.
Not once.
Not when things are easy.
Consistently
You are human. It’s okay.
You do not have to be the hero to be respected.
You don’t have to have every answer to be trusted.
Some of the best leaders I know say, “I don’t know, let’s figure it out.”
Permission to let go.
Delegation isn’t dumping work. It’s developing people.
If you keep holding onto everything, your team doesn’t grow. You don’t either.
You are building dependency. Let them.
Permission to live.
Take the day. Go to the game. Play golf with your team. Step away when you’re sick.
The leader who never leaves doesn’t become great. They are teaching those around them that it must be this way.
If you do that, then they will do that.
You may have never thought of it this way before. MAKE the time. It’s not about HAVING the time. Plan that day. Plan that golf outing. Plan the lunches and the coffees with team members. Plan all these things. You will do it when you plan it.
Then, you get used to it. Permission granted.
“It’s okay to step back.”
“You don’t have to do it all.”
“You can let go now.”
When you choose it, when you see it. When you do it. It changes you, your business, your team, and your family. Everything around you.
Would you want to follow someone who was like you? Ask yourself that question.
You think clearer.
You lead better.
Your team steps up.
You become more present.
It’s about knowing what to hold… and having the courage to let go of the rest.
If you are thinking, yep, some of that is me. It’s because YOU need to give yourself permission to just breathe. Take the time. It will make you better. I promise you that.
You don’t have to be that person.
