The Loneliest Job in the Building: Why Sales Leadership Isolates You (And What Actually Fixes It)

Congratulations, You Got the Promotion. Now You're Alone.

Nobody warns you.

You get the promotion. You start the company. You open the office. You get the title you worked years for. And for a minute, it feels AWESOME. More money, more respect, more of everything you wanted and were going after.

Then Monday comes.

You Lose Your Work Friends and Nobody Tells You

Friday, you were one of them. Monday, you're the boss.

The relationship changes. You're still friendly. You still care about the same people. You aren’t getting invited into the venting sessions anymore. You're not part of the gossip about leadership or the rules nobody likes. Simple things. You're just not in that circle. It can suck at first.

And no, you didn’t do anything wrong.

That's not a bad thing. It's the product of the five people you surround yourself with. We’ve all heard it. The ones who are supposed to be there will be. The rest will leave. That's the nature of the game. You're becoming who you're capable of being. They are in the holding pattern.

Why You Can't Tell Your Team Everything

This isn't about lying. It's about what they need to know.

Your team doesn't need your anxiety around numbers. Your worry about who might get let go. Your uncertainty about what you may be behind on. Putting that on them doesn't make you more relatable. Leadership requires a level of vulnerability, sure. There's a difference between being vulnerable and telling everything.

You can be open. You can guide, develop and help your people without putting that on them. Remember, if you tell one person on the team the whole team eventually finds out. Just a matter of time.

Why You Can't Tell Your Boss Everything Either

Here's the flip side.

The person above you, your boss, your board, whoever is evaluating your performance isn't always safe to fully open up to. Not because they're against you but because the moment you share every struggle, something happens. Are they fit to be a leader?

So leaders end up going both directions. Not sharing everything down not sharing everything up. That's where the real problem starts.

What Isolation Actually Costs You

I was told this years ago, if you want to be on an island by yourself, you will be. If you don't, you won't.

Isolation makes slower decisions. You sit with things too long. There's power in saying a hard thing out loud. Not because someone gives you the answer, but because hearing yourself say it tells you what you already know.

Avoided conversations grow in your head. The thing you're avoiding becomes bigger between your ears. It doesn't always look like burnout, sometimes it just looks like checking out.

Three Fixes That Feel Like They're Working (and Aren't)

• More books. Reading and listening are great. Books don't make the follow-up conversation you're avoiding any less uncomfortable.

• More podcasts and blogs. You can hear a hundred good ideas and still not know which one applies to your situation.

• Working harder. Coming in earlier, staying later. Feels productive, but is it?

What Works

  1. Peers who understand the seat you're sitting in. People who've been where you are and can say, “yep, dealt with that to, here's what I tried.” Not a script to follow.

  2. An outside voice. Someone with no stake in the organization, no agenda, nothing to gain from steering you toward what's best for the company instead of what's best for you. someone dedicated to you.

One of the leaders I work with told me, “I didn't realize how alone I felt until I wasn't.” Most don’t get here because they ego says they don’t need help. Is this you?

You're Not Alone

Leadership is genuinely good. The relationships you build, the people you watch hit goals they didn't think were possible. That's the point.

If you're a leader who's tired of figuring all of this out alone, that's exactly what this is for. Not because we know everything, we don't. Because we've been in that seat.
